| Thallus effuse, forming irregularly spreading patches to 3 cm wide, loosely appressed to the substratum, not flaking off, minutely felty, dull, pale grey to grey or greenish grey, with scattered paler slightly raised areas, continuous, to 300 µm thick, with numerous calcium oxalate crystals in the photobiont layer; hyphae 1–2 µm wide. Hypothallus sparse, indistinctly byssoid, white, rarely with red areas, composed of 1–2 µm wide hyphae. Prothallus to 1.5 mm wide, byssoid, composed of interwoven and radiating hyphae, white or with orange-red areas, or completely orange-red. Pseudoisidia numerous, cylindrical, rarely subglobose, unbranched or sparingly branched, with few projecting hyphae, concolorous with the thallus, 0.1–1.0 mm long, 0.05–0.10 mm wide. Photobiont cells solitary or a few aggregated, rounded to oblong, 8–14 × 7–12 µm. Medulla thin, distinct, white. Asci and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Thallus K–, C–, KC–, P+ yellow, UV–; containing psoromic acid (major), 2’-O-demethylpsoromic acid (trace), subpsoromic acid (trace), unknown quinone (trace). |
